Thanksgiving Turkey FAQ

When should I reserve my Thanksgiving turkey?

As soon as possible! Our most popular sizes and local farm-fresh turkeys go fast. We recommend placing your order in mid-to-late October to guarantee your pick. The earlier you order, the more options you’ll have.

What kinds of turkeys do you offer?

We offer a wide selection, including:

  • Fresh local Maine turkeys from trusted farms like Greaney’s
  • Organic and free-range turkeys raised with care and sustainability in mind
  • Shady Brook Farms turkeys for consistently sized, reliably tender birds
  • Fully cooked Boar’s Head turkey breasts for ultimate convenience

Each one is hand-selected by our butcher team for quality and freshness.

What’s the difference between your local turkeys and Shady Brook?

Our local Maine turkeys come from small family farms where birds are raised with more space and often on pasture. They tend to have richer flavor and you’re supporting your neighbors. Shady Brook turkeys are consistently sized, reliably tender, and raised on family farms in the Northeast. Both are excellent choices—it really comes down to whether you prioritize supporting local Maine farms or want the reliability of a regional brand.

Do you offer turkey breasts or just whole turkeys?

We offer both! Turkey breasts are perfect for smaller gatherings or if you prefer all white meat. We also carry fully cooked Boar’s Head turkey breasts—just heat and serve. Just let us know what you need when you order.

What about the fully cooked Boar’s Head turkey breasts?

These are a game-changer if you’re short on time or oven space. They’re fully cooked and ready to heat and serve, so you can focus on sides and dessert. Perfect for smaller gatherings or as a backup option if you’re cooking multiple proteins. Ask our deli counter staff about sizing and pickup.

Are your turkeys fresh or frozen?

Most of our local and organic birds are fresh (or blast-chilled fresh). Shady Brook and other national brands typically arrive frozen. We’ll make sure you know exactly what you’re getting when you place your order.

What does “blast chilled” mean?

Some of our local farms use blast chilling to lock in peak freshness. This process rapidly cools the turkey to 28-32°F right after processing. Your turkey may arrive very cold with some ice crystals on the surface, but it’s fresh, not frozen. Think of it as extremely well-refrigerated. It ensures your bird stays at optimal quality from farm to table.

How big of a turkey should I get?

Here’s a simple rule of thumb:

  • 1–1.5 lbs per person for a smaller gathering with minimal leftovers
  • 1.5–2 lbs per person if you want leftovers (and who doesn’t?)

For example, a 14–16 lb turkey comfortably serves 8–10 people with plenty extra for sandwiches the next day. A 20 lb turkey feeds 12–15 people.

Can I request a specific size?

Absolutely. When you order, let us know your preferred size range (for example, 12–14 lbs or 18–20 lbs). We’ll do our best to match your request based on availability. Keep in mind that turkeys are natural products, so we may be within a pound or two of your ideal size.

Can I order multiple turkeys?

Yes! Whether you’re hosting multiple meals or feeding a crowd, just let us know how many birds you need.

How much do turkeys cost?

Prices vary by size, type, and farm. Local organic turkeys typically run higher than conventional options. We’ll provide specific pricing when you place your order, and you’ll see the final price when you pick up based on the actual weight of your bird.

Do I need to pay a deposit?

No deposit required. You’ll pay for your turkey when you pick it up.

Can I cancel or change my order?

Of course—life happens! Just give us a call at least 5 days before Thanksgiving (by Friday, November 22nd) and we’ll make any changes you need.

When should I pick up my turkey?

Pickup is typically Monday through Wednesday before Thanksgiving. We’ll send you a confirmation email and text reminder with your specific pickup day and time window as the holiday approaches. Plan to pick up during that window so your turkey stays at perfect freshness.

What if I miss the reservation deadline?

We always order a few extra birds, but availability gets tight as Thanksgiving approaches. If you miss the deadline, give us a call or stop by the store—we’ll do everything we can to help you out.

How do I store my turkey before cooking?

Keep your turkey in the coldest part of your refrigerator (usually the bottom shelf toward the back) until cooking day. Leave it in its original packaging.

What if my turkey is partially frozen when I pick it up?

This is completely normal, especially with blast-chilled birds. Simply place it in your refrigerator and allow time to thaw before cooking. See our thawing guide below.

How long does it take to thaw a turkey?

If your turkey needs thawing, plan ahead! In the refrigerator, allow:

  • 8-12 lbs: 1-2 days
  • 12-16 lbs: 2-3 days
  • 16-20 lbs: 3-4 days
  • 20-24 lbs: 4-5 days

Never thaw at room temperature. For faster thawing, you can submerge the wrapped turkey in cold water, changing the water every 30 minutes (allow 30 minutes per pound).

How do I cook my turkey?

Basic roasting:

  • Preheat oven to 325°F
  • Plan for 13-15 minutes per pound for an unstuffed turkey
  • Plan for 15-17 minutes per pound if stuffing the bird
  • Always cook to an internal temperature of 165°F in the thickest part of the breast and thigh

Let your turkey rest 20-30 minutes before carving. Stop by the store or check our website for our detailed roasting guide with tips and timing charts!

Are giblets and neck included?

Yes! You’ll find them in a bag inside the cavity (check both ends). Remove them before cooking. They’re perfect for making gravy or stock.

Do you sell brining kits or sides?

Yes! Check out our Butcher Counter and Prepared Foods Department for house-made brines, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, and all the fixings. You can make Thanksgiving easier—and just as delicious—with help from our kitchen.

Do your prepared items contain common allergens?

Our prepared foods may contain dairy, gluten, nuts, and other allergens. Ask our staff about specific ingredients when you order, and we’ll make sure you have all the information you need.

Do you offer delivery?

Turkeys are pickup only at our store, but we’re happy to help you carry your bird to your car!
